From Photo to Whimsical Character:
How I Turn Pets into Art

Every pet has their own unique personality, and that's exactly what I try to capture in my portraits. When I create a pet portrait, I don't just draw what your pet looks like. I aim to tell a little story and turn them into a whimsical character while keeping them recognisable and true to life.

Step 1- Getting to Know Your Pet Through Photos

Everything begins with the reference photo you send me. This is where I start studying the small details- the eyes, the fur patterns, and the expression that shows your pet's personality.

Even a single photo can tell me a lot about your pet. I look for that little spark that makes them special, whether it's a curious tilt of the head or a calm, gentle gaze.

Step 2- Sketching the Character

Next, I start with a light pencil sketch to build the structure of the portrait. This stage is all about proportions, expression, and capturing the right pose.

I spend extra time on the eyes here, because that's where the emotion of the portrait really starts to show.

Step 3- Building Colour and Detail with Coloured Pencil

Once the sketch is complete, I slowly build up layers of coloured pencil. This is the most time-intensive part of the process, but also my favourite.

Working in soft layers allows me to create depth, texture, and smooth colour transitions, especially in the fur and around the eyes and nose.

Step 4- Adding the Whimsical Touch

This is where the portrait becomes a little character. After the main portrait is finished, I add the themed or playful elements that match your pet's personality.

Whether it's a costume, background detail, or gentle fantasy touch, I love creating artwork that feels imaginative and full of heart, while keeping your pet as the focus.

No two pets are the same, and no two portraits I create are ever exactly alike. Each piece is drawn by hand with care, making every artwork a truly personal keepsake.
